The New Adventures of Old Apple, Part 1

Or, more to the point, APPLE HAS A NEW LAPTOP! :D :D :D :D

She is a lovely Samsung QX with an Nvidia graphics card, and her name is Romana. Yes, I name my electronics, what of it? :P She’s currently downloading WoW and has about 6GB to go – I’m probably going to log on shortly with background downloading so I can adjust my settings – I’m starting entirely from scratch, so I have quite a bit to set up. :)

I should be back at some point later this evening with an update of what she’s running like. PLEASE be good, Romana, I’m counting on you!

Preparing for Cataclysm (Apple style)

I know, I know, this post is a bit late considering Cata’s going to hit on Tuesday. On Tuesday, I will be at work, and on my lunch break will be checking both GameStop and Best Buy to see if they’ve sold out of Cataclysm. I feel like most of the WoW players in this area probably got the download, so I should be okay – my computer is just SO SLOW at downloads, it’s annoying.

SO! Here is how I am preparing for Cataclysm, and what I’m going to do once it hits.

1. This afternoon and tomorrow, I will focus on maxxing out Lisan’s herbalism and alchemy (which are at 225 and 151, respectively). This may or may not be a frustrating venture, as recipes aren’t always cheap, and I’m kind of poor, but that’s okay.

2. Tuesday after work, I will (hopefully) bring my boxed version of Cata home and… promptly not do a thing with it. I will log on Mattie, probably, and keep levelling her while everyone else prances around Gilneas, Kezhan and the Lost Isles, Hyjal, and Vashj’ir.

“Okay, wait,” you say, “but Apple, don’t you need to get Lis levelled to 85 as soon as possible?” Well, yes. But the thing is that with all the people piling into the levelling zones, Donna (my current laptop) just isn’t going to be able to handle it. I’d be getting 1-2 fps while trying to quest, and that would honestly be worse than starting later, because I’d be so FRUSTRATED that I wouldn’t want to play. So what I’m going to do is not level Lis at all until Romana (my new laptop) arrives and I’ve installed WoW and everything on her. By this point, two things will have happened, I think: 1) the vast majority of people who are dragging a toon to 85 before rolling Worgen or Goblin will have pulled ahead at least a bit, so there will be less competition for my quests, and 2) I will be so revved up to get STARTED that I will hopefully get some real momentum going and will be able to actually get levelled in a timely fashion.

3. Once I have Cata installed, I’m going to level. But I’m not going to blow through so quickly I don’t know what’s going on, because what’s the fun in that? I don’t care if it slows down my levelling a bit – I’m going to ENJOY the game I pay for. :)

Anyway, that’s my plan. It’s… not much of a plan. I’m not stocking up on things in game or out, I’m not getting ready to settle in for a marathon gaming session, I’m just getting ready to play the new parts, when I get the chance. :) I can’t wait!

[Insert appropriately emo lyrics here]

Tonight was… meh.

Okay, to be perfectly clear, this was not because the instances weren’t interesting and cool (they were) or because my guildies weren’t awesome (they were). It was because for some reason, I was just completely off my game today. (What follows is over 1.2k words of me rambling and being slightly emo. It is not important, feel free to skip it if you so choose.) Continue reading “[Insert appropriately emo lyrics here]”

New Computer Soon? And other ramblings.

One can only hope. I get a certain amount of money from my uncle for Christmas and my birthday, every year. I’ve also found a laptop that I like, that should run pretty nice for WoW (as I’ve said before – I don’t need it to be 120fps in Dalaran or anything like that. An average 30fps is fine, higher is, of course, better, but whatevs) and isn’t TOO expensive. I’ve emailed my dad saying I found a good one, and that if he’ll spot me the money/buy it for me/whatever, he is welcome to have my holiday money – Christmas and my birthday in the spring. If we do that, he’d only be paying about $250, which is less than he’ll spend on my sister this Christmas, I can tell you right now. So we’ll see how that goes – cross your crossables for me.

Also, tonight I’m trying out raiding on my girlfriend’s laptop. If the damn patch downloader will get its arse in gear and finish up in the next three hours – I’m not holding my breath at this point, but I should be good to go as long as it’s MOSTLY done – so far, my trials have produced the following results: 30fps with no addons, about 20fps with the addons I use on one of my alts when she levels, which are definitely heavier than the ones I have for raiding. AND keep in mind, these were both tested early on in the “yellow” stage of the streaming player, which I’m assuming is going to drag my numbers down. I’m hoping that with all (or at least MOST) of the patching installed and only my raiding addons (Dominos, Grid, Clique, DBM, OmniCC, Quartz) and everything but WoW and Mumble shut down, I should be getting some pretty good frames tonight. Or, at least, pretty damn awesome by my normal standards (ie – anything over 10fps in a 25m).

Last night I rediscovered my hunter, Summer, as I finally got her out of Hellfire and into Zangarmarsh, while also levelling up her poor neglected hyena, Impisi. Yes, I know Summer’s name shows up as Sámhradh, but that’s just Irish for Summer, so work with me. Summer’s been around (and slowly levelling) for a good long while, though I don’t recall when I first rolled her. I remember her being stuck in the teens for a while, and then she spent a good chunk of time in the 30s, and then a HUGE amount of time in the 50’s, and she’s been stuck at just over 60 for a few months now. I respecced her just after 4.0 hit, but otherwise haven’t poked around on her at all. But last night, feeling aimless and lonely, I logged onto her and started levelling a bit. She dinged once, got a nice new bow, and I basically cannot WAIT to get her to Nagrand – she’s always felt more comfortable in places like Orgrimmar and the Barrens, she’ll like hanging out (and helping out) with the Mag’har, or however that’s spelt. I also plan to tame her a void stalker at some point, or possibly one of the white-ish wolves in Terrokar. :D And ONE DAY she will have that red wolf I keep meaning to get her…

And while playing her, trying to rearrange her action bars with their new layout and new abilities, and trying to figure out what rotation would work best, I was reminded that I’m kind of a crappy hunter. I always was, honestly, but I got by. And normally I’d be trying to improve, but the thing is that I play Summer for FUN. I don’t generally queue up for dungeons with her (I hate DPS queue times), she’s not in a guild, I don’t plan to raid with her (though sometimes I’m tempted). My less-than-optimal huntering is hurting no one but me, and I don’t care, so why should I start focusing NOW on how to get the OMG BEST DPS? Anyway, that ramble aside, she’s very fun to play with. She makes me wish I knew more people who RP’d horde-side, because while I’d love to play her with, say, Fizzy Stouthammer, Summer is a Sin’dorei. She could never be anything else. It just wouldn’t work. So she’s alone (well, with her big brother, who’s kind of dead, so it’s this thing) and it makes me sad, sometimes. :(

But then, I’m also fail at remembering to log on to my RP characters, so, uh. >_>

Anyway, it was a fun evening. I had fun and got to spend some time with a long-neglected favourite of mine, and tonight I’ll be hopefully seeing a raid in more than 4fps for the first time EVER and I’m basically having a grand ol’ time. :) Still feeling a bit in-a-funk, but there are worse things to feel, so.

Now if only I had some SODA. T_T

NaNoWriMo Update (and more!)

So I’m still alive, for those of you who don’t follow my nanoblog and/or twitter. :) Nano’s been kinda crazy – I’m getting a lot of work done, so much that I’ve doubled my goal for the month! I’m still behind, but I broke 24k words before I went to bed last night, and if I can keep up 4k words a day for the next week or so, I can drop down to 3.3k a day for the rest of the month! YAY! Unfortunately I am getting very little done on Lisan’s story when Mitsune isn’t kicking my ass about it, but I’m enjoying the crazypointless Doctor Who fic I’m writing. :) Pure fluff, just like this blog!

We started a new raid lockout last night – while I got my frames up to 4-5 at some points, it still wasn’t great, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t do half as well as I did last Thursday. I know Judgements of the Pure kept dropping off, among other things. But I got a nice cloak to replace the blue one I had from Occulus, and we downed our first heroic (Lootship, yay!), and we got Heroic Rotface to 24% on the second try! But we only had a little time left and Kurn wanted to get Putricide down before we finished for the night, so we downed him on regular after that. Fun times. :)

In other news, I was featured as a guest star in the latest Fourth Wall comic! :D :D :D I love how Aymes draws me, so busty and cute! Third panel face is my favourite. If you want an accurate representation of me and Mistuke’s approach to word wars this month, it would be me beating his arse every time, but it’s a funnier comic this way. ;)

And, last but not least, I am crocheting a pair of fingerless gloves/wrist warmers for my girlfriend AJ. She is very pleased by this, as it’s getting cold and her joints get achy when she types too long in the cold.

Lost Flame [Nanowrimo Excerpt]

Just a note – this is technically part of my Nano, but won’t be happening until towards the end of the story, and the letter itself may or may not be in it. If you’re confused, read this and then this from Rades over at Orcish Army Knife. Lis is much less prolific than Gerk was, heh.

Gwenna,

I realise it’s been a long time since we’ve spoken. With how often I write letters to Sara, you’d think I’d remember to write to other people in my life as well. Unfortunately, I’m not writing out of missing you, but because the thought of leaving damned self-righteous naive MacKellar to deal with this (as if he’d even remember) makes me sick to my stomach.

Gerk is dead. Burr, too. I couldn’t

They sent me looking for them. Burr was already dead, and Gerk… I sat with him, Gwenna. I did everything I could, but even healers can’t fix everything. But I did stay with him, until the very end. And I killed as many of those Scourge bastards as I could. Wasn’t many. Wasn’t nearly enough.

I will always remember Gerk as the first person who really helped me come to terms with… well, being a Dwarf. Both of you were so good to me when I was struggling, and I’m glad that my commander sent me to Ironforge instead of home to Stormwind. With the help of both of you, I learned to feel like myself, and also like a Dwarf. The time I spent with him and Burr in Northrend was generally pretty good – they were so cheerful, even in the face of everything happening. They had hope – more than I had, most days. It was a wrench to get stationed away from them when I was sent to look for Brann up in the storm peaks.

You know I’m not much for stuff like this. Emotional, complicated… I’d much rather have something to hit, or someone to heal. This kind of healing is beyond my ken. I don’t have any words that’ll make this better for you, and I don’t know how much this must hurt for you. But I can swear one thing to you, Gwenna, with all my heart.

Arthas will pay for this. I will find a way to be there, when he’s finally confronted, and when we take him down, for me, it will be for Gerk, and Burr.

I’m sorry for your loss.

Doing this Nano Thing

Hey there, if you don’t follow me on twitter, I just want to point you towards my Nano Blog. There I will be posting what writing I do during the month of November, in hopes that some moral support (ie – readers and comments) will help me reach my goal of 50k words. :)

Also, I’ll probably be pretty scarce because of Nano – though don’t you think for a second I won’t be posting a post of flail and squee after my raid on Tuesday. ;)

Just a tiny thought to be remembered

So I know some of you know that I will, on occasion, sing on livestream.

Tonight I started singing just to do a little show for one of my soon-to-be-Guildies, Liberty, who you will probably hear oodles about once she starts playing again because she is SO awesome. And, because she is in Europe right now, it got late, and she had to go to bed. But instead of logging out, she put me on her speakers, curled up in bed, and just let my livestream play her to sleep.

I literally sang someone to sleep tonight. It feels kind of awesome. :)

When PuGs are Win

So I haven’t been doing randoms PER SE the past day or so – I’ve been running specific dungeons for specific drops – only one has dropped so far, and since it means I don’t have to run H ToC or H PoS on purpose for a while, I’m okay with that. My first run today was a reg PoS. Pretty straight-forward. We run in, have no problems. The tank seems to be in some really good gear, and I believe he was running one of the DPS, a mage, for a drop. We plow through the trash and down Garfrost without a hitch. Roll for the staff that drops–

And the DK and the mage immediately drop group, leaving me and the two DPS (Ret pally Cloudydaze of Silvermoon and Hunter Quassimodo of Terenas, both of whom don’t mind being mentioned by name, for the record) to requeue and wait for a tank.

We wait.

Cloudy gets a bit bored and pulls one of the trash mobs. No prob, I’ve got leet heals, they’ve got leet deeps. It IS regular PoS, after all, not Heroic. We pull another. And another. And suddenly we’ve easily and without issue cleared all the trash up to Ick and Krick.

“I don’t expect to tank ick in DPS gear,” Cloudy says, and we all agree. There’s a minute or two of silence, and then he says, “I could maybe try, if you guys wanted.”

“What’s the worst that could happen?” Quassi asks. “We die?”

“I’m game if y’all are,” I say. So we hitch up our trousers, tighten our belts, adjust our helms, and dive in. There’s lots of movement. We strafe out of the puddles, we run like mad away from the arcane bombs.

And then, suddenly…

click for the full screenie

We did it. We three-manned Ick with two DPS and a healer. Yes, it was regular and honestly we could probably all have been running it Heroic, but STILL. The point stands that we had no tank and we downed a boss anyway. And that makes me happy.

After that, we decided to wait for the queue to give us a tank, because the next trash would undoubtedly murder us, quickly, and we got to chatting. About various MMOs, and then about whether we got more purples from vendors, crafted, or drops. I asked them if they minded me posting the screencap without their names blurred, they asked where my blog was. (HI GUYS!)

Eventually, we went our separate ways. We were gonna try and requeue altogether, but I needed to feed the dog, and run errands (which I realised too late I CAN’T run, because I don’t actually have the money for it), so we went our separate ways. I may never run a random with them again, but they were AWESOME. And hopefully they’ll stick around here so we don’t completely lose touch. :)

Blizzcon!

Quick note for you guys – I’m going to be liveblogging the Friday Blizzcon events with Ice from Druid Main on her blog – a few other bloggers might show up, you can ask us impertinent questions between sessions, and then marvel in awe and my and Velidra’s scathing wit as we cover the Song/Dance/Costume contest while Ice raids. :)

Gonna be fun, hope to see you there!
